how do I foster A Dog?
The first step is to complete the online application form. Upon receiving your completed application, we perform reference checks and a home visit. The purpose of the home visit is to develop a better understanding of the type of dog you are looking for based on your home, lifestyle, family size, etc.
What happens after i am approved to foster?
Once you are approved, we match you with a suitable foster dog. The number of dogs waiting for placement at any given time varies. We will contact you and provide you with information on the dog(s) needing a foster home so you can determine if you feel you are a suitable match.
what are the responsibilities involved in fostering?
The responsibilities include day-to-day care, walks, feeding, socializing, and working on basic training. This not only helps the dog in their adoption journey but also makes the fostering process more enjoyable for you. If concerns arise that go above your comfort level, we provide the necessary support to help you and the foster, including the involvement of local trainers.
what supplies are covered by the agency?
4 Lucky Paws provides all essential supplies needed to care for your foster dog, including a crate, leash, collar, and food. For the best interest of the dog and the home, we ask our foster families to crate train.
Can I have other pets?
Having other pets in the home is very common. We try our best to determine if a foster dog is social with other animals and the extent of their contact with them before being placed. We use caution when introducing dogs into a foster home, regardless of whether they have been social in the past. Re-homing is a stressful process and may cause different behaviours that wouldn’t normally be present. We do occasionally have dogs that need animal-free fosters, but that again changes from foster to foster.
how long is the application process?
The timeline for applications varies based on your location. First, we must process the applications, call references, and then are in contact to set up a home visit. Generally, we schedule home visits for the following week. As there are only two individuals that run the rescue, the length of this process differs depending on our schedule.
how long should i expect a dog to stay with me?
The average time frame for a dog in foster care is 2-3 months. This provides us enough time to get to know the dog and address basic vetting needs. However, the duration of their stay depends on several factors including the dog’s personality, health, training requirements, and any special needs.
What if i want to adopt the dog i am fostering?
4 Lucky Paws foster volunteers have precedence to adopt the dog they are fostering. Our dogs are posted on the adoption page once they have had time to settle into their new surroundings, which generally takes 2-3 weeks. We ask that you decide if you would like to adopt your foster during this time. However, if a foster is leaning towards adopting at this point, we can give them a little extra time to decide.
What if i live in an apartment building?
Dogs that come through the rescue are frequently fostered and adopted by individuals living in apartments. The needs of every dog are different, some are fine being in an apartment setting while other dogs simply need more space or less commotion going on around them. If we place a dog in an apartment and it doesn’t seem to be working, we move the animal to a more suitable home.
